This article summarizes the events of the modern therianthropy community, mostly over the Internet and other online sources, though some events involve in-person interactions and meetings.

Late 20th century (1992-1999)[]

1992[]

1993[]

  • November 7th - members of Alt.Horror.Werewolves began to talk about identifyng as were creatures
  • November 29th - the word 'phenotype' is first used
  • December 1st - the first discussion of shifts on AHWW

1994[]

  • November 19th/20th - the first howl was hosted by Smash Greywolf at Valley Lake Campground in Ohio
  • December 13th - the word 'therianthropy' was first suggested as a replacement term for 'lycanthropy' on AHWW

1995[]

  • April 14th to 16th (Easter weekend) - the first Spring Thaw Howl was held on a farm near Coshocton, Ohio, by AHWW member, Firewolf
  • November - the 2nd Harvest Howl was held (adding more later)

1996[]

  • March 18th - the idea of a 'day for us to howl' was brought up on AHWW. This is now celebrated as therianthropy day
  • March 29th to April 1st - the 2nd Spring Thaw Howl was held near Taylorsville, Kentucky, and was hosted by MoonShadow
  • June 8th - the term 'polywere' was first used by the AHWW, the term is now defunct and has been replaced with the term polytherian
  • July 25th - the term 'theriomythic' was first used by the AHWW

1997[]

  • January 19th - the term 'contherian' was created by Joshua Lion Templin in a four-part essay posted to AHWW
  • January 25th - the term 'paleotherianthrope' was first used by a member of AHWW

1999[]

  • August 17th - BleuLynx announces Weresymbol contest through AHWW, sprouting the eventual creation of the Theta-Delta symbol
  • November - Kamatu announces voting for Weresymbol contest

Early 21st century (2000-2025)[]

  • This Therian Wiki was created by Sherlawk Dragon.
  • The term Animal-hearted came into use to distinguish between identify "with" and identifying "as".

  • September 2015 - The term Copinglink coined by Who-Is-Page on Tumblr.

2016[]

  • Tumblr and Amino become popular social platforms across the therian community.
  • Introduction of quadrobics and roleplay videos spread across Youtube and Instagram.

2017-2019[]

  • Therian vs. Otherkin” discussions intensify, with growing identity overlap and debate.
  • Discord becomes a major hub for community interaction.
  • Rise of “TikTok Therians” in niche communities, though still relatively small.

2020[]

  • COVID-19 lockdowns push more people online, causing a resurgence in introspective identity discovery.
  • First noticeable wave of therians on TikTok begins.

2021-2022[]

  • Quadrobics and howling videos gain traction, sparking both support and backlash online.
  • The term “therian gear” becomes widely used among TikTok therians.
