A mental shift is when a therian (or otherkin) takes on the mentality of their theriotype. It can also occur unrelated to therianthropy, such as with a Shaman or shapeshifter.

They can be Voluntary or Involuntary....of course, that doesn't matter if you don't believe this %$#&!

Presence of mind during a mental shift

Therians experience varying degrees of humanlike thought during their mental shifts. A mental shift may be as subtle as a sudden craving for raw meat that is overcome by human inhibition, or as strong as the therian not remembering anything in very rare cases. Like many shifts, the severity of a mental shift usually increases when a therian is experiencing mental, emotional or physical stress, especially if the shift is involuntary. Usually, a therian will have full control over themselves, with impulses to do things as their theriotype would do.

Benefits of voluntary mental shifting

Voluntary mental shifting is associated with a feeling of freedom and inhibition. When experienced during meditation, mental shifts are an excellent way to relive stress and to generally feel better. Using mental shifts to discover one's theriotype is another benefit. If one finds himself or herself feeling the need to growl during a mental shift, it is likely that the therian has a canine theriotype. However, it may simply be a cameo shift.

Lack of shifting

A number of therians claim that they have only one mindset that is both human and animal at once, rather than separate mentalities that they shift between. These people are sometimes called contherianthropes, but this term has recently fallen out of favor.
