A shadow shift occurs when a therianthrope sees the form/shape of their theriotype around themselves as a transparent apparition or when their appearance/reflection seems to change (this is an illusory change that mostly happens in low, dim lighting).
This shift is not necessarily a supernatural phenomenon, and it can be easily explained rationally, with causes such as due to eye fatigue, and the brain filling in missing information with what it expects (the theriotype), potentially causing these shifts. And things like attitude, posture, and making animal sounds can give off the image of a physical change. This is not a physical shift. [1][2][3]
Shadow shifts were first discussed on AHWW in 1999. But this shift is rarely mentioned in the community.[4]
