This blog post is about auditory shifts, by an ASU program attendee specializing in zoology.
Auditory shifts are when oneself experiences an involuntary-sensory shift from hearing a specific sound. This often occurs for spiritual therians who may use is as a traumatic response, such as myself. I have, in the past, had trauma responses to howling, considering in my past life I was killed by a rabid wolf shortly after they killed my mother. Of course, I still have some blurry memories of it, but it still occurs frequently. Just remember that this isn't a phenomenon only occuring in spiritual therianthropy nor therianthropy in general, however. My sister's friend, who I will call Aspen to shorten things, is a dragon otherkin and does experience auditory shifts frequently. Another alterhuman I've met before was a psychological therian, who experiences them as well.
Also, auditory shifts can also happen as a response to sounds of nature, things in oneself's theriotype's habitat OR by things that may attract oneself's theriotype. Aspen has auditory shifts due to hearing stuff that may trigger her prey drive, such as robins chirping or rabbits hopping nearby. Obviously, xe doesn't go after it since it's not ethical, they're wild animals that should not be harmed & that can possibly have a disease or severe illness, and they have learnt to control those shifts, but it will still have them under a small amount of time and with less intensity than before.
So how can you prevent these? Well if you start to have an auditory shift but still have a human conciousness, make sure to use any anxiety rules such as 3-3-3 or 5-4-3-2-1, or whatever works for you. Also, me, my sister and Aspen all use code words, such as "yellow" if we notice her having an auditory shift in public or "red" if xe still have human conciousness and are aware of themselves having an auditory shift. You should only prevent these if they are negative shifts, such as panicking from wolves howling or injuring yourself during it. Call your national emergency line (e.g. USA: 911, most European countries: 112) if you or someone you know is severely injured during an auditory shift. You can also see here for some more tips.
