This blog post is about the reason behind the frequency of therianthropy being faked or misdiagnosed in some people.
One of the biggest pet peeves of alterhumans is when they meet a fake. "Fake" (in noun form) is a term frequently used by the alterhumanity community to identify and state people or individuals who faking or are possibly faking alterhumanity. It could be pretty hard to find these people sometimes, but othertimes it's obvious right away.
Alterhumanity, in itself, is a very unique and rare occurence. Due to its sense of rarity and microscopic view to the public eye, no studies have actually been performed on the amount of alterhumans roaming the earth. On TikTok, YouTube, and other social media platforms, alterhumanity might seem pretty common. But in actuality, around a majority of the videos and posts of alterhumans found on social media are misinformational, and usually are people questioning an identity, pretending to be one in a trollish or joking manner, or even just a quadrobist or gear maker who doesn't consider themselves an alterhuman. Thousands of alterhumans online have stated it is a choice, or a religion, or all fun and games. And if it doesn't seem right that alterhumans themselves are spreading misinformation online about their own community, chances are... a lot of them aren't real. And this is why the term "fake" arose in the community.
Oftentimes, misdiagnoses of alterhumanity is also considered faking. Although this is oftentimes used to identify fakes, some individuals who misdiagnosed themselves as an alterhuman may state they feel a non-sexual or non-romantic attraction to their kintype(s). Misdiagnoses are possibly a lot more common than the occurance of genuine alterhumans themselves.
So, why is it so frequently faked or misdiagnosed? According to Justin Unruh, a man who studied psychology and human behavior, humans' "ingrained differences are left unnoticeable at face-value."[1] Individuality, to humans, is a trait that makes them unique and recognizable.[1] For example, some of your favorite music artists or bands may use signatures like two guitar strums at the start of every song or a sudden statement of their artist name at the start of every song because it is recognizable. Take DJ Khalid for example.
Because alterhumanity is so uncommon, it's seen as this different and unique trait and less as an involuntary identity, which drags people to research, experiment and discover what they see isn't normal, therefore causing a frequency in faking or misdiagnoses.
