Therianthropy

Vocals are a way to connect to oneself's theriotype via noises.[1] Vocals originated in the therian community since the beginning of the community's rise, and are a large way to connect and gain euphoria. Remember that practice makes perfect and oneself won't be the greatest when first doing vocals. This is also the case for quadrobics.

Some vocals may include (dependant on oneself's theriotype):

  • purring, meowing, hissing, snarling
  • chirping, squawking, crowing
  • howling, barking, growling

Some vocals are harder to replicate because of human restrictions, however, there are other ways that can help with dysphoria. Dysphoria is hard to tackle, though, there are plenty of places to find help with such an issue (e,g, YouTube and Discord).

Cat Vocals[]

Meowing[]

When a cat meows, there are multiple meows that it can make. In fact, there are over 60 different meows, and over 100 different sounds that cats make; despite the fact that to a person unused to cats, all meows might sound like 'meow'. Some sound like 'mew', 'meow', like the words show, but there are many tones and actions that change the meanings of these meows. However if you make a general 'meow' or 'mew' sound and add a purr in the back of your thought then you should achieve a somewhat realistic 'meow'.

Purring[]

To purr, move the tip of your tongue to the top of your mouth, and breath out with your mouth almost/fully closed. You should hear a 'purr' sound. Keep practicing until you can do it easily, then try varying the length. If you do a short purr, that goes up at the end, like 'purr-ip', it will sound a little like one of the 'trills' that a Maine Coon (a cat breed) makes. Kittens and younger cats make this sound, usually to signify happiness.

Hissing[]

When a person who has not listened to cats, and practiced, tries to hiss, it generally sounds like the snake 'ssssss', or 'hisssssss'. Despite this being the spelling of the word 'hiss', a cat's hiss actually sounds fairly different! Of course, cat's hisses vary, but the general sound isn't 'hiss', but 'harc' or 'hirc'. To hiss press the back of your tongue up against the top of your mouth (or molars) and breathe out. You should hear a hiss sound.

Tip: Observe a cat's face when hissing and try to copy that. You can find videos of cats hissing such as this video to understand it better, especially if you don't have any cats with you or around you. If you do, do not cause harm to the cat.

Yowling

To yowl, (angrily, like if you're a cat in a fight), press the back of your tongue against your molars (if you want it to look more realistic), and make a slightly high-pitched "yiernnnn" or "yernnn" sound. Yowls are commonly followed by a hiss, a swat of a paw, or both.

Dog Vocals[]

Growling[]

Growling can come from many animals e,g, a dog, cat or even sometimes reptiles. to growl you generally make a 'rrr' sound, or a 'grrr' sound. play around with lip movement or keep them still to create different animals, for example; dogs and wolves tend to growl deeper and moving your lips can help a lot with that.

Snarling[]

Snarling is quite a difficult one to explain, however, snarling is very fun and can get rid almost anyone. To snarl, you start by flashing your teeth really wide. Then all you do is growl but a lot harsher, as if someone just stole your house (or territory) and you are trying to defend it.

Barking[]

Barking does not sound the same as it looks. To bark all you do is; make a 'hough' sound or a 'arrgh' sound, then all you need to to is make those sounds but extremely quickly and slightly loud. Another suggestion is to make an "O" with your mouth to make it more canine-like.

Howling[]

Howling is incredibly simple so there will be basically no text. All you do is make an 'awoo' or 'aroo' noise but make it longer and play with the tone and pitch to get a nice howl. Some people like to make an O with there hands an cover there mouth to get better pitch, however this is not always needed.

Fox Vocals[]

Bickering[]

Bickering is the sound/vocal that foxes make when they are fighting or playing. Basically, just try to get some saliva in the back of your throat, but make sure not to swallow or get too much. Then, try opening your mouth like a rectangle if that makes any sense. Now just try to make a sound from the back of your throat, and put some heart into it.

Glossary[]

Tone[]

The expression of oneself's voice when doing vocals. For example, an angry tone for a canine therian may be growling or snarling.

Pitch[]

The quality of a sound governed by the rate of oneself's voice when doing vocals. For example, a fox therian may have a high pitch when doing playful bickering.
